IEEE CSS Award for Technical Excellence in Aerospace Control
Control system theory and practice have enabled numerous significant advances in the aerospace industry. These advances include precise station keeping for communication satellites, aggressive maneuverability for high performance military aircraft/missiles, and semi-autonomous operations for unmanned air vehicles. However, applying general control theory to aerospace problems is not a trivial task. To encourage and reward excellence in this effort, the IEEE Technical Committee on Aerospace Controls (TCAC) has established an annual award for contributions to the field of aerospace controls engineering.
The objectives of the award are to:
-
Emphasize the significance of control theory and practice to aerospace problems,
-
Publicize the significant contributions that are being made by the international controls community to aerospace problems.
-
Encourage researchers and practitioners in the control community to apply their techniques to aerospace applications.
The IEEE Control Systems Society (CSS) Award for Technical Excellence in Aerospace Control will be given annually to a person or team of people that performed an aerospace control engineering activity that demonstrates excellence and significant results with demonstrated impact. Examples of the type activities that will be considered for the award include the following:
-
a paper appearing in an IEEE publication that specifically addresses aerospace controls issues
-
a patent application or award that significantly advances the state-of-the-art in aerospace controls
-
a recognized aerospace program accomplishment whose foundation is aerospace controls
-
an innovative product release that uses state-of-the-art aerospace controls
Selection/Basis for Judging - Papers and/or patents will be judged on the following criteria:
-
Originality of technical innovation,
-
Significance/relevance to the aerospace community,
-
Clear description of the aerospace application,
-
Potential impact on the practice of aerospace engineering,
-
Clarity of exposition in the nomination letter.
